Professional support, without the pressure

Hi, I’m Allan Bunyan, a certified counsellor and registered member of the CPCA. CPCA is a professional body for counsellors in Australia. Membership means my training and conduct are held to a set standard.

I hold professional indemnity insurance and work to a code of ethics.

I am also verified on Psychology Today, giving you another way to check my professional profile before reaching out.

The areas I support

I support people working through anxiety, grief, stress, addiction concerns, burnout, disability adjustment, relationship pressure and major life changes.

My style is calm, direct and practical. No jargon, no judgement, and no pressure to have everything figured out before you start.

Why this work matters to me

I have used a wheelchair since I was ten, after an operation on my legs that did not go the way anyone hoped. I also live with an upper limb difference, so I know what it is like to be looked at differently.

I grew up on a rural property and have spent almost my whole life in and around Cairns and Far North Queensland.

Lived experience, not assumptions

Living with disability has given me resilience and a real sense of what some people are up against. I will not pretend to know your situation, because every person’s experience is different.

But I do know what it is like to deal with systems that are hard to get through, discrimination, and other people’s assumptions.

What counselling with me is like

Counselling with me is not about being told what to do or being pushed through a rigid program. It is a calm, practical space where we slow things down and look at what has been happening.

The first session is usually about understanding what has brought you here, what has been feeling heavy, and what you would like to be different.

My approach

My approach is person-centred, practical and trauma-informed. Where helpful, I may draw from CBT-informed strategies, ACT-informed approaches, solution-focused counselling and strengths-based support.

The aim is not to “fix” you. The aim is to help you understand what is going on and build a way forward that feels realistic.

Questions people often ask

Frequently Asked Questions

Starting counselling can feel like a big step. These are the questions people ask most before booking.

How do I get started with counselling in Cairns?
The easiest way is to book a free 15-minute chat through the contact page, or call or text 0423 763 712. You don't need to have it all worked out before you reach out. That's what the first conversation is for.
Do I need a referral to see a counsellor?
No. You can book directly without a GP referral or a mental health care plan. Just get in touch and we'll go from there.
Where is your counselling practice located in Cairns?
The practice is based in Cairns with in-person sessions available for people across Cairns and surrounding areas including Smithfield, Gordonvale, Redlynch, Edmonton, and nearby communities. Online sessions are available to anyone in Australia.
How much does counselling cost?
Private sessions are $95 per hour. NDIS participants are charged at the current NDIS rate. There are no Medicare rebates or private health rebates available. If you have questions about fees before booking, just get in touch.
Can I use my NDIS funding for counselling?
Yes. NDIS participants can access counselling through their plan. Self-managed and plan-managed participants are welcome. Find out more about NDIS counselling here.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is mostly about getting a clear picture of what's going on for you. What's brought you in, how it's affecting you, and what you're hoping to get out of coming. There's no pressure to have it all figured out before you arrive. Sessions are 60 minutes.
Do you offer online counselling across Australia?
Yes. Online sessions are available to anyone in Australia. You just need a quiet space and a decent internet connection. Research shows online counselling is just as effective as in-person sessions for most concerns.
Is counselling confidential?
Yes. Everything discussed in sessions is confidential. There are a small number of legal exceptions, which are explained clearly in the first session.
Do you offer counselling for men?
Yes. Men's counselling is one of the main areas I work in. It's a practical space to talk through what's going on, without pressure or judgement. Learn more about men's counselling here.
Do you offer after-hours appointments?
Yes. After-hours and weekend appointments are available. Sessions run Monday to Friday 9am to 8pm and Sunday 1pm to 5pm. Get in touch to check availability.

You don't have to keep handling it on your own.

If things have been building up, talking to someone can help. Sessions available in Cairns and online across Australia.
